| WebStor Information and Setup for Windows 95 |
Q) WHAT IS WEBSTOR AND WHY DO I NEED IT?
A) Webstor is a way to use the Internet to backup critical data
from your machine to a remote location that is out of your own building. It
protects important data from fire, machine theft, or other misfortune. Off site
data storage is a necessary precaution against loss of data.
Q) WHAT IS IT?
A) Webstor is a Windows 95 File Transfer
program available from McAfee. It provides an explorer-type
interface with for working with your home directory
at MaineStreet. It also has a built-in timer to make scheduled transfers of certain
files and directories, and it remembers which files have already been
updated and only sends new or changed files.
For more information and pricing for WebStor see http://www.mcafee.com.
Q) HOW DO I USE IT?
A) Although webstore can back up entire hard drives
to your home directory on the server at MaineStreet we don't recommend
using it this way. Transfer rates at 28.8 baud are about 5min.
per megabyte. At that rate it would take you 3.47 days to back up your
1 gigabyte hard drive. Don't do this.
We recommend you use WebStor to save a couple of those mission-
critical files or directories to a safe place on our server.
WebStor in conjunction with the Win95 autodial feature and a program
like Keepgoing for Win95 will give you everything you need to
have your machine log in, for instance, every Monday at 12:00 am and upload your
mission-critical files to a safe place automatically.
Another good use of Webstor is to update your web pages, WebStor
provides a clean interface for Win95 to keep track of and update
your changing web files.
Q) HOW DO I CONFIGURE WEBSTOR ON THE MAINESTREET SYSTEM?
A) Follow Webstor's instructions for installation. This is what the
configuration screen in which you enter information specific to you
MaineSreet connection looks like:
- "Ftp server" is the server that houses your home directory
at MaineStreet. It could be 'auburn', 'brunswick', 'gray', 'paris',
'portland' or a couple of others. You will know which one you
are on because it appears in your POP account in your mail
program configuration: username@server.maine.com
- "Username" is your username; it is in front of the '@'
sign in your email address.
- "Password" is your current password.
- "Directory"is the directory that will store your web
store files. By default it is always located in your home directory. You
can make one of these yourself by logging in to your home directory
using a telnet program like Ewan and using the 'mkdir' command.
Q) THEN WHAT?
A) Once you have configured Webstor you need to dial in and
log on to MaineStreet. Then you can run the WebStor program.
Q) WHAT ABOUT THE AUTO-DIAL FEATURE?
A) WebStor does have an automatic schedule program.
For this feature to work you must enable the Win95 auto-dial
feature located at START-SETTINGS-CONTROL
PANEL-AUTO-DIALER. After the auto-dial
is connected, when any program makes a call the
Internet connection will come up and ask to log in.
In order for Win 95 to not hang while it waits for you to
push the connect button you need to use a program like "Keep Going."
It will make the connection for for you. Note: For this
to work you need to have your username and password in your
dial-in script. If Win 95 has to ask you for a password it will
hang and wait for it. If your username and password are in
your dial-in script your connection should go right
through when it's placed by the program.
You then have the famous 'midnight backup' for your system.
