Netscape - Directory

Under Directory and File Locations you should specify the location of your Temp Directory for Windows. In most cases it will be a directory named "temp" right off the root directory (C:\temp), but you should know where it is. Look at your autoexec.bat file to find its location. Find a line that says "SET TEMP=" and whatever it points to is your temp directory.

The Bookmark File is the file that contains the information about your bookmarks and is usually c:\trumpet\netscape\bookmark.htm.

Supporting Applications are applications which work hand in hand with Netscape to accomplish tasks not native to Netscape. The only one which we will cover is the Telnet Application which under most circumstances is C:\trumpet\ewan\ewan.exe.

The News information section should be filled out according to the graphic. The news server is news.maine.com and the News RC file is C:\trumpet\winvn\newsrc.

Network, Images and Security - The network section to this screen will allow you to empty your caches whenever you feel that they are causing problems. Periodically emptying them will help your system to run more efficiently.

The location of the Disk Cache Directory is usually C:\trumpet\netscape\cache.

Under Images there are four radio buttons to choose from, Dither to Color Cube is the default for Colors and Display Images While Loading is the default for the loading of graphics. Security Alerts allows you to specify when you would like to be warned about security issues.

Mail and Proxies - The only section we will concern ourselves with here is the Mail Section. By filling this section out you will be able to send mail to e-mail addresses which are listed as links on the World Wide Web. The first line should read mail.maine.com. The second should be your name and the third should contain your e-mail address.

Helper Applications - Helper applications are other applications which Netscape will automatically launch when it needs help viewing a particular type of file.

For example *.htm files can be read in Netscape so you may check the "Use Browser as Viewer" option while that type of file is selected. If you had *.tif files selected in the upper portion of the screen you would need to select the "Launch Application" option and type in the path and file name of the program you wish to use to view the *.tif files. If you always want to save particular types of files to the hard drive automatically click on the save option while you have that type of file selected.

The Rest of the Options Menu

The rest of the choices of the Options menu allows you to customize the look of Netscape on your screen. After selecting or deselecting an item you must click on the Save Options option to save the changes.

The Directory and Help Menus

The options contained in the Directory and Help menus of Netscape take you to various pages on the web produced by Netscape Communications Corporation and are worth taking a look at from time to time.
