Macintosh - FTP

There are three similar applications that have been included in the suite of Macintosh internet software provided by MaineStreet Communications: Fetch, Anarchie and TurboGopher. These applications are also known as ftp clients. Ftp means "file transfer protocol". The applications can access ftp sites and allow you to download files from these sites to your computer.

Ftp sites are actually computers that have free software, newsgroup archives and other interesting things. Most of these computers belong to universities, and commercial organizations. Many of the commercial sites will only allow you access to directories that contain their software and software updates. These sites can be very helpful for getting 'bug fixes', or patches for specific applications that you might be using on your computer.

Since the world of ftp and the scope of these three applications is quite large, this document will cover the most basic use of the applications - downloading software.

Anarchie

Anarchie is the easiest one to use, and all of these instructions can be transferred to the other two applications stroke for stroke.

First, make sure that you are connected to MaineStreet via your dial up connection using InterSlip or PPP. Then, double click on the Anarchie icon. Anarchie will open with a small box in the upper left. Go to the File menu on the menu bar and drag down to the Open Bookmark option. Anarchie will then open a box that asks you to select which bookmark file to use. Select bookmarks. This file will also appear with a brown icon that looks like a file drawer. Select this file by clicking on the highlighted Open button on the lower right of the window. This will open a large window with a list of the ftp sites that are available in this file for you to access.

To access these sites, just point the cursor at the site you wish to access, and double click. Anarchie will open a small window to give you the status of the connection to that site. When the connection is established, you will get a new window displaying the contents of that site in the same format as the bookmark list.

To get inside the folders that came up in the new window just double click again on the folder itself. Anarchie will contact that site and open that folder by creating a new window with the contents of that directory.

Downloading a File

If there is a file you wish to download, just double click on it. Anarchie will bring up a small window that reports the download status.

Please note that the file names in most of these ftp sites can be quite cryptic. There is no standard about naming files, so you might end up downloading a few files you don't need before you can decipher the file-naming style (if there is one) on that site.

Each window has an archive document that lists, and gives a brief description of, all the programs within that directory. You can download the archive first, go off line, read it and determine which programs you want, then go back on line and download the specific file.

Exting Anarchie

To exit Anarchie simply go to File and drag down to Quit. This will quit Anarchie, but still leave InterSlip on and connected. If you wish to disconnect from MaineStreet at this time, simply click once on the Disconnect button in your dial up application , whether it's Interslip or PPP.
